For horticulture professionals in New Mexico, you will have the opportunity to become certified by taking the New Mexico Certified Nursery Professional exam in February, 2025.

In addition to general horticulture practices, this certification concentrates on information that is specific to New Mexico. Managing or working in a New Mexican nursery requires a well rounded knowledge of plant identification, physiology, entomology, weed control, turf management, pruning, landscape design, and disease control. A NMCNP manual is available and serves as a useful study guide for those who plan to take the exam. The manual is a comprehensive review of nursery management, operational practices and production.

To become certified, you must pass a three part exam:
1. Identification of live or pressed plant specimens
2. 100 true/false and multiple-choice questions which cover basic knowledge gained through study and practical experience. The manual is a good resource for this part.
3. A basic landscape design problem which includes drawing a landscape plan.

And you must complete an Exam Application that documents your eligibility.

To prepare for the plant identification part of the NM exam, you are encouraged to also register for the Colorado Certified Nursery Professional (CCNP) online seminars. The NMCNP exam will take place on Wednesday February 5, 2025 in in conjunction with the Think Trees Conference in Albuquerque, February 6 - 7, 2025. Please contact CNGA for details.
