Balled and Burlapped (B&B) Laborer

Fort Collins Wholesale Nursery, Colo.

Fort Collins Wholesale Nursery is looking for a B&B laborer. Position will be seasonal and full-time Mon through Fri 8-5, with overtime as needed. Position will begin mid-late February and will last through August or so depending on weather and business.  The ideal candidate will possess a combination of skid-steer experience and some horticulture experience. Position is outside in most conditions.

Duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Unloading B&B material from incoming trucks and putting away
  • Loading B&B material onto trucks for delivery and for customers
  • Assist shipping crew with loading trucks of container material
  • Assist walk-on customers with orders and loading
  • Basic machinery maintenance
  • Check trees for signs of stress, insects, disease, etc
  • Work closely with Shipping Manager to get trucks out in timely fashion

Landon’s Greenhouse is looking for a Nursery Manager.  Successful applicant will genuinely enjoy working with people and plants in a fast paced retail environment.  

“Must have” qualifications include:

. High proficiency with Microsoft Excel

“Gee wouldn’t it be nice” qualifications include:

. Three to five years’ prior experience dealing with the public on a day-to-day basis in a retail establishment, preferably in the nursery industry

. Knowledge of Rocky Mtn. regional woody plant material specific to Zone 3/Zone 4

. Horticulture-related educational degree

. Prior supervisory experience

Key Position Responsibilities include:

. Order nursery stock for retail sales; coordinate product mix, product sizing, shipment deliveries, and pricing

. Work directly with customers to select trees and shrubs and advise customers on plant problems/resolution and plant identification

. Safely execute physically demanding aspects of the job including lifting and loading trees and shrubs into customer vehicles, moving plants and other merchandise, shoveling, raking, pruning, potting, etc.   

. Build Excel spreadsheet product schedules, supplies schedules, and other computerized tools to facilitate and manage the operation of the nursery department

. Manage the facilities and grounds on an 8-acre garden center location.  Ensure the property appearance is professional, neat and clean.  Coordinate facility and equipment repair/maintenance activities with internal staff or external service providers

. Maintain crop health by monitoring, fertilizing, and treating insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides as needed.  This includes routine spraying in the garden center greenhouse.

. Operate tractors, forklifts, loaders, and other equipment.

We are taking resumes for Professional Gardeners for the 2012 Season. 

Please have the following:

A sense of humor.

At least two years experience maintaining lawns and gardens required.  Individual must have valid Colorado driver's license (with no DUI's).  Ability to use equipment such as blowers, weed eaters, hedgers, pruners, and trailers (including backing, etc).  The positions calls for someone who represents our company so must be able and willing to work physically outdoors under all weather conditions, including lifting and digging.  Must be self-motivated, able to prioritize work and know plant material. Work with a team and be able to take directions.

Absolutely no drugs and no drama. 

If you are a home gardener and only do your own home and “think “ you would like to work in the field with a professional crew, please only apply if you are able to garden for eight-plus hours in the heat five days a week moving at a fast pace (multiple homes per day). You must be in shape to do this job.

  •  Work closely with our team of managers to organize and facilitate multiple maintenance and installation jobs.
  •  Assist with vegetable gardens and assist with harvests.
  •  Inspect fields periodically to ascertain nutrient deficiencies, detect insect, disease, and pest infestations, and identify foreign-plant growth.
  •  Select, purchase and schedule fertilizers and herbicides in fields.
  •  Maintain perennial, annual and herb gardens and greenhouse products.
  •  Assist in creating and designing custom pots and baskets.
  •  Develop and plan future projects.
  •  Explore new avenues and assist with development and sales of crops.
  •  Conduct rapid assessments of plants health and proactively implement fertilization, nutrition systems where necessary.
